Criminology and Security Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study that researches in to the causes and prevention of criminal behavior, informed by normative, legal and philosophical perspectives on scientifically established facts.

Criminology and Security Studies at Philomath University prepares students with skills and knowledge about crime and the counter-crime measures. Our students are exposed to social behaviors which instigate crime and then learn the various investigative, analytic and problem-solving measures for combating crime and ensuring peace and security of lives and properties.

The course will give students insight into unlawful activities, human behaviors, perpetrators of crime, psychology and effective means of rehabilitation and impact of crime on citizens and society as well as probing into the factors that drive people to engage in criminal activities. The department provides hands-on experience to students to learn the nitty-gritty and become expert in their chosen field.

Department of Criminology and Security Studies is fully accredited by the National Universities Commission among the startup courses at Philomath University. The course enables students to acquire a theoretical and methodological framework for generating and assessing knowledge about crime and social control. The program draws upon disciplines from law to neuroscience to develop a liberal arts approach to the subject of crime.

The Department gives insight into unlawful activities of people in the society and probes into the factors that drive people to engage in criminal activities. The Department will work with relevant security and correctional agencies in partnership for the overall benefit of our students in order to impact our communities positively for a crime free society. The Department will provide the needed learning environment to ensure that students compete favourably with their peers globally.

Requirements

Five Credits at SSCE in English, Mathematics, Government/History and any other two relevant subjects

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination:
English, Mathematics, Economics and any of History, Government, Literature in English and Christian Religious Studies/Islamic Religious Studies

Direct Entry:
Two ‘A’ Level passes chosen from Accounting, Economics, Management, Mathematics, Geography and Statistics
